Bio

Siyane Deressa is a PhD candidate at the department of Agriculture Economics since February 2023. She holds a BSc in Public Health from Jimma University, Ethiopia and MSc in Nutrition and Rural Development with major in Public Health from Ghent University. Before coming to Ghent for her studies, Siyane was an assistant lecturer in Jimma University College of Medical Science, Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Research

Siyaneโ€™s doctoral research, which is funded by FWO Vlaanderen, explores how food systems can be more inclusive to ensure the Right to Adequate Food of street-connected children in urban areas of Ethiopia. The study explores the perspectives and experiences of street-connected children regarding their Right to Adequate Food and how they can assert it. It investigates how existing interventions, policies, and societal actors adopt the Right to Adequate Food approaches of street-connected children and how the voices and perspectives of street-connected children can be incorporated into programs aimed at empowering them.
