Bio

Stijn speelman (°1979) holds a degree in Bio-Science Engineering (2002) and Policy Economics (2003) from KULeuven. In 2003, he joined the Department of Agricultural Economics at Ghent University as teaching assistant. After obtaining his PhD on decision support for agricultural water management in South Africa in 2009, he continued working in the department as a FWO post-doc researcher till 2014. In October 2014 he became tenure track professor.

He is member of the Natural Capital platform at the faculty of Bio-Science Engineering and board member of the CESAM (Central and South America) platform of Ghent University . Since 2016 he is academic coördinator of the International Master in Rural Development.

Research

His main research interests lie in the socio-economic aspects of the interactions between humans and natural resources in developing countries. Focus areas are evaluating the efficiency and sustainability of the resource use outcomes, analyzing how management policies affect the relationship between actors and natural resources, investigating the role of the institutional settings in sustainable resource management and valuation of ecosystem services. In terms of methodologies, extensive expertise with choice modeling has been built up.
