Bio

Carlos Quezada joined the Department of Agricultural Economics as a PhD student in June 2023. He was born in Bolivia and works there as a full-time researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones Socio-Económicas at the Universidad Católica Boliviana. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering and a specialization in Food Security and Food Systems from the same university. His research is focused on addressing the sustainability transition of agroecosystems, combining a socio-ecological systems approach with process-based agricultural-environmental modelling techniques and geospatial analysis.

Research

Carlos’s research aims to assess the integration of agroecological principles into agroecosystems of vulnerable Andean communities, evaluating their effects on ecosystem services provision, adapting to climate change, and improving family incomes. The research involves creating a detailed overview of the current biophysical and socioeconomic conditions of Andean communities, developing a comprehensive framework to analyze the dynamics of their agroecosystems and socio-economic interactions, and identifying optimal agroecological scenarios that can lead to increase sustainability, profitability, and resilience of the communities. This doctoral research is part of the CReA project, an Institutional University Cooperation project between Flemish Universities and Universidad Católica Boliviana funded by VLIR-UOS.
