Bio

Her research interests include mainly digitalization, climate change, nutrition, poverty, food security, and other topics related to agricultural economics. Mariam is mainly involved in two projects funded by the European commission : DESIRA and Lex4Bio. Her research supervisors are both Prof. dr. ir. Jeroen Buysse And Prof. dr. ir. Marijke D’Haese .

Research

Joost’s research adds sociological and political lenses to the study of food systems and rural development, with a non-exclusive focus on the Global South. It pays particular attention to dynamics at the local scale in urban as well as in rural contexts.

Ongoing research includes the governance of urban food systems (Ecuador, Tanzania, Belgium, the Netherlands); the mobilising power of agroecology as a (counter-hegemonic) movement and practice (Bolivia, Argentina, Europe); the recognition and valorisation of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) in processes of food system innovation (Ghana); and dynamics in the Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System AKIS (Ethiopia, Belgium).

Bio

Mariam A. joined the Department of Agricultural Economics as a doctoral researcher. She is from Senegal and holds a Master of Science in Statistics and Economics. She has five years of experience working as a research analyst at IFPRI and as an associate scientist at AKADEMIYA2063. She participated in different projects including the National Agricultural Investment Plan (NAIP) Analytical Support for ECOWAS and Southern African countries, the PARI project supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the climate adaptation support program (CASP) and the PAPA Project (Senegal Agricultural Program Support). Her responsibilities included data processing, econometric analysis, CGE modeling, literature review, and report writing. Besides her professional background, she has experience in teaching and supervising students at the national school of economics (ENSAE) in Senegal .
